Instead of the usual ground-bound cauldron, a special edition cauldron for the Paris Olympics was carried by a hot-air balloon, symbolizing the first ride taken in a hydrogen-filled gas balloon in 1783.
The cauldron, designed by Mathieu Lehanneur, serves as a symbol of liberty in line with the national slogan of Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite, with a 7-meter diameter ring and a 30-meter tall balloon.
