Architecture studio 2m26 has renovated an annex in Keihoku, Kyoto into a new atelier and office, while preserving its century-old wooden structure. The project focuses on traditional Japanese carpentry, utilizing locally sourced materials and handcrafted elements. Innovative design features like cypress structures, sliding doors, and passive climate control through a rammed earth floor are integrated. The studio's dedication to craftsmanship is exemplified by handmade wooden windows and a distinctive cedar bark roof. This renovation sets the stage for further architectural developments on the site, merging historical and contemporary practices harmoniously.
2m26 retains as much of the original handcrafted timber frame as possible, repairing damaged elements using traditional Japanese carpentry techniques.
The annex embraces passive climate control, with a rammed earth floor made from a mix of clay, sand, and lime, allowing the space to breathe in Kyoto's humid summers.
Handmade wooden windows designed and built by 2m26 frame views of the surrounding landscape, emphasizing the studio's commitment to natural materials and craftsmanship.
A cedar bark roof constructed using a time-honored process shelters the outdoor space, demonstrating the integration of tradition in modern architecture.
