The article discusses the architects' exploration of domestic materials in their design processes, specifically for a residential house in Lom Sak District, Thailand. The project is informed by the local geology, particularly large gravel deposits, and the site's proximity to Khao Nam Ko Yai mountain. Extensive research on vernacular architecture guided the design process, emphasizing local materials, specifically reclaimed timber, sourced from old homes in Chiang Mai despite initial challenges. The findings from this research significantly shaped the spatial arrangement and structural integrity of the residence.
The architectural design of the residence is deeply rooted in the unique geological characteristics of the site, particularly the presence of gravel deposits and the influence of Khao Nam Ko Yai.
Our studio conducted extensive research into vernacular architecture, using historical works to inform our design process and ensure sensitivity to the local context.
