TerraCotta Café serves as an extension of Chai Thung Restaurant, utilizing terracotta for its availability and cultural significance in Dan Kwian. This materials-driven design showcases bronze-like tones and continuous surfaces throughout, creating visual harmony with the natural surroundings. The entryway is enhanced by red solid bricks reflecting traditional pottery forms. Inside, terrazzo flooring combines terracotta fragments, reinforcing sustainable practices and local craftsmanship. Furthermore, jor saggars from Dan Kwian emphasizes the café's cultural roots and artistic heritage, solidifying its connection to local architectural traditions and landscape.
The architectural approach centers on the reinterpretation of Dan Kwian's terracotta, a material selected for its availability, durability, and cultural relevance.
Characterized by its bronze-like tones, the terracotta is fired at high temperatures without added pigments, producing a natural and consistent palette that defines the café's material language.
This design move, inspired by the forms of traditional pottery, scales down the approach to the building and establishes a threshold that connects the built structure to the surrounding natural context.
Internally, the café floor features white terrazzo incorporating fragments of terracotta grade B tiles sourced from local factories, highlighting both reuse and artisanal input.
