Cycle and Pedestrian Crossing Over the Fareja Bridge / Romulo Neto Arquitetos
Briefly

Architects were tasked with designing a pedestrian and cycling crossing between Vagos and Sousa, focused on preserving the ruins of a historic bridge. They proposed a 'museum bridge' that complements the ruins, which provides continuous visual interaction throughout the crossing. The design utilizes curvilinear forms and eco-friendly materials, ensuring harmony with the landscape. Budget constraints necessitated a solution that optimized construction resources, leading to a modular design for effective assembly and economic efficiency, all while aiming to respect the historical significance of the area.
The challenge was to create a 'museum bridge' enhancing the old ruins while ensuring it had its own identity and could endure autonomously.
We identified that a crossing with a curve and counter-curve would allow continuous visual interaction with the ruin, enriching the experience.
The clean design approach and choice of materials like corten steel and wood ensure the new bridge integrates harmoniously into the natural environment.
To stay within a €180,000 budget, we designed the bridge in five parts to optimize resources and reduce logistical costs.
