"Nothing was fast design. Everything had the touch of the hand. From the way the floors were laid in herringbone to the piano key details, everything felt so kind of thoughtful and considered. This building used to be a milk factory and the leaded-glass doors in the kitchen opened to [what was once] the executive office."
Athena Calderone, an interior designer and creative director, transformed a five-floor Tribeca apartment formerly designed by renowned French architect Thierry Despont. The renovation honors Despont's elaborate style while incorporating Art Deco and Beaux Arts elements central to Calderone's design philosophy. Every detail received careful consideration, from herringbone flooring to piano key details. The space features wine-colored upholstery, high-gloss lacquers, and rare auction pieces by designers including Maria Pergay, Albert Cheuret, and Jacques Adnet. Calderone drew inspiration from the building's history as a former milk factory, particularly its leaded-glass doors, combined with her travels to Paris, Milan, and Vienna to create a sophisticated home that references bygone eras in contemporary ways.
