How DJ Louise Chen Renovated Her 753-Square-Foot Paris Apartment (Hint: It Was All Smooth Sailing)
"The living room was already bathed in light, says Ardalan of the main space, which boasts large windows overlooking the rooftops of Paris. The rest of the apartment, not so much—the hallway, which provides access to the other bedrooms and bathrooms, was galley-like and shadowed."
"Ardalan and his team had to determine the height of the wooden panels, how to install them in a uniform manner, and how many panels to use while still allowing the spaces to breathe. The finalized millwork doesn't completely reach the ceiling, which was an intentional design choice."
"The panels are also affixed with ship doors and porthole cutouts between rooms, both of which bring light into what was originally a darker space."
Louise Chen, a DJ, owns a 753-square-foot apartment in Paris's 9th arrondissement. After becoming a mother, she sought to make the space more family-friendly. Architect Cyrus Ardalan reimagined the layout, drawing inspiration from boat designs. The living room features large windows, while the previously dark hallway was transformed with dark plywood panels. Ardalan's design choices included leaving a white edge near the ceiling to prevent a cramped feel and incorporating ship doors and porthole cutouts to enhance light flow throughout the apartment.
