MVRDV Unveils A Revolutionary Energy-Positive Exhibition Space Made Of Twisting Boxes - Yanko Design
Briefly

MVRDV has unveiled Portlantis, a unique energy-positive building in Rotterdam, comprising five stacked boxes dedicated to exhibition spaces. The design incorporates recyclable materials, a wind turbine, and a façade that supports reusability. The structure, spanning 3,533 square meters, includes panoramic windows, an atrium with a rooftop restaurant, and a bright red external staircase for access. MVRDV's founding partner, Winy Maas, describes Portlantis as a storytelling machine, linking the port to the city and enhancing public awareness of urban port activities. It thoughtfully ensures a minimal environmental footprint upon its eventual dismantling.
"Portlantis is a beacon, it's eye-catching, but it's also a kind of watchtower," said MVRDV founding partner Winy Maas. "When you live in Rotterdam, the port sits on the horizon - it's 'over there' and many people don't know what goes on there. Portlantis gives people a way to investigate, and see how things are changing in the port, how that relates to the city, and how it affects the life they live in the city. It does this extremely efficiently - like a machine for storytelling."
