Kathleen Whitaker, an LA jewelry designer, relocated to a charming 1920s cottage in Montecito during the pandemic. The cottage, originally part of a train depot, is a unique and compact space. Unfurnished upon arrival, Kathleen embraced this as a design challenge, creating a peaceful retreat using mostly existing furniture and decor. She navigated restrictions on changes by undertaking a removable DIY project while switching out unattractive wall sconces for a more appealing look.
"The cottage dates back to the 1920s. It is a single-story one-bedroom-at 675 square feet, exactly what you need (and nothing more) for a getaway spot."
"It was a little confining but fun to work with big limitations," she says. But even with the limitations-no painting, no permanent changes-she was able to sneak in a small, nail-free, easily removable DIY project.
