Rogue trader left gaping hole' in woman's house after taking 10k deposit
Briefly

Gary Roberts, a builder from Cheshire, received a suspended six-month jail sentence for fraud carried out against a homeowner. After persuading her to pay over £17,000 for a home extension that he never completed, he illegally withdrew funds as his company faced liquidation. The victim was left with a damaged home, exposed to the elements, and a messy garden. The Insolvency Service condemned Roberts' actions as harmful and emphasized their commitment to investigating such fraudulent behaviors against the public.
David Snasdell, Chief Investigator at the Insolvency Service, remarked that Roberts had left his victim in a state of utter desperation after wrecking her home.
Roberts pleaded guilty to fraudulently removing property in anticipation of the winding-up of a company, contrary to section 206 of the Insolvency Act 1986.
The victim's house was completely exposed to the elements after Roberts demolished the kitchen, leaving her in dire conditions with rubble strewn across the garden.
The Insolvency Service takes protecting the public from rogue traders like Roberts extremely seriously, stating that fraudulent behavior that inflicts financial harm will be pursued.
