This bespoke cottage took just over a year to build and cost only 350K - showing the huge benefits of a custom-build route
Briefly

Paul and Johanna, having outgrown their previous home, embarked on a self-build journey with Border Oak to create a bespoke oak-framed cottage in North Herefordshire. Their aim was to design a larger space that was light and open, integrating with the natural surroundings. Given their previous positive experience with Border Oak, they found the plot selection process straightforward. However, designing their dream home required careful consideration to ensure harmony with neighboring houses while allowing creative freedom—balancing custom choices with community aesthetics.
"We loved the creative side of building our home - self-building has allowed us to create exactly what we need as a family and for the house to change as the children grow, too," says Paul.
"A huge amount of care and thought went into each individual home, how they related to one another as well as how they assimilated into the historic street scene," explains Merry Albright of Border Oak.
A considered but adaptable palette of materials and colours was specified across the scheme, which gave everyone choices while still enabling the homes to work collectively, says Merry.
