
Roku CEO Anthony Wood said the new home screen, then in testing, is expected to increase monetization over time by encouraging viewers to subscribe or watch more ad-supported content. The updated Roku OS home screen uses a slimmer left sidebar with images instead of text. The center layout includes “Top Picks for You,” a personalized row that highlights trending and relevant content based on interests, with no two users seeing the same mix. It also includes “Quick Access,” which uses AI to surface most-used apps and shortcuts. Roku added “Destinations,” curated hubs spanning genres and moods across multiple streaming services. Some users object to recommendations and ad-like personalization, and the update does not add a cross-app recently viewed selector.
"However, some users are perturbed by the new home screen. "I don't want recommendations! I know what I want to watch. Plastering ads for shit you think I want to see is the fastest way to get me to not watch it. This is going to suck," an apparent Roku user going by Kruse on Reddit posted today."
