This idea has been on my mind for some time, shaped by observing the political situation not only in Bulgaria but more broadly. In Bulgaria, we are going through a profound political crisis.

An artwork is not created when an artist finishes it. It is created when it's visible to an audience and when it becomes discourse. If there's no ecosystem, nothing works. I grew up in Qatar as a queer person. In Qatar, LGBTQ+ people are silenced. Stepping out of line comes with severe punishment. It is not safe to challenge your family, the country, or religious teachings. You are forced to disappear in order to survive. The open and vibrant Qatar presented through Art Basel is not the state that exists.

My mind, though enfeebled by New Year's celebrations, was fine; I'd traveled to Queens to see Jeffrey Joyal's "my Life Underground" at Gandt. For this exhibition, the gallery left its longtime home in a basement for a column-laden miniature ballroom in a clinic up the block, complete with a wrought-iron chandelier and ghostly portrait hanging above the crown molding. The Ukrainian-born jewellery artist Aleksandr Dotsenko, who was serving a three-year prison sentence in Russia for allegedly placing anti-war slogans in a supermarket in the Leningrad region, died on 19 February of a heart attack, according to media reports. Dotsenko, who was 65 when he died, was convicted of "public calls for terrorist activities" alongside his wife, the artist Anastasia Dyudyaeva, in July 2024. Dotsenko was sentenced to three years in prison, while Dyudyaeva is serving three-and-a-half years.
