California's already wet winter is breaking rainfall records, with another powerful storm moving in this weekend along with the threat of new flooding and mudslides. After a remarkable dry streak in 2024 that helped fuel last January's firestorms, this winter is making up for it, with some areas already approaching average rain totals for the entire season. "It's been an interesting season," said Mike Wofford, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard. "We're way above normal for precipitation."

A strong storm system that brought relentless winds, rain and snowfall to California this week was expected to ease Friday, but there was still a risk of high surf along the coast, flash flooding near Los Angeles and avalanches in the Sierra Nevada. Waves near the San Francisco Bay Area could reach up to 25 feet Friday, parts of Southern California were at risk of flooding, and avalanches could hit the Lake Tahoe area, officials warned.

Severe Tropical Storm Bualoi, the 15th tropical cyclone in the Philippines this year, continues to lash the central islands of the Philippines and was moving northwest with gusts of up to 135 kilometres per hour (84 miles per hour) as of 05:30 GMT on Friday, the weather bureau Pagasa said. It warned of the risks of heavy rainfall in some areas.
