Leipzig took the lead in the 20th minute when Yan Diomande turned Julian Ryerson inside out, and delivered a low cross for an unmarked Baumgartner to flick home with the outside of his boot. Baumgartner added a second in similar fashion before half-time, again guiding a low cross from the left - this time from David Raum - past Gregor Kobel.
It was pinball; Marco Grull's delivery was headed out, nodded back towards goal by Isaac Schmidt and heading out for a goal-kick, only for Senne Lynen to stretch and just about keep it in, slicing it up in the air, before it fell to Keke Topp. It felt as if the 21-year-old's sublime finish had been cut and pasted from a different sequence entirely, a sumptuous left-foot volley on the swivel that arrowed past Borussia Monchengladbach's goalkeeper, Moritz Nicolas, hitting the net.
They went ahead through Marcus Tavernier's 32nd-minute penalty, which was awarded when Amine Adli went down under Bart Verbruggen's challenge. Adli - starting in Semenyo's place - was initially booked for simulation, but referee Paul Tierney overturned that decision following a VAR review, to the fury of Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler. Brighton, who had earlier seen Jack Hinshelwood go close on two occasions, dominated possession in the second half but looked destined for defeat.
Ao Tanaka scored a 96th-minute equaliser as Leeds hit back to deny Liverpool a morale-boosting win at Elland Road. The champions appeared ready to put their recent uncertain form behind them when two quick-fire goals from the recalled Hugo Ekitiké at the start of the second half put them in control. Leeds hit back, though, and a Dominic Calvert-Lewin penalty and Anton Stach goal restored parity and set up a frantic final 15 minutes.
