The shooting happened around 5:56 p.m., and medics rushed him to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition. Neighbors described a crush of police cars and ambulances swarming the NYCHA complex as officers locked down the area and began searching for the shooter.

One person died after a fire broke out in a Brooklyn apartment building early Thursday morning, cops and firefighters said. The unidentified victim's lifeless body was found after the blaze ignited inside the Ocean Ave. building near Avenue W in Sheepshead Bay just before 2 a.m., police said. A total of 79 firefighters and medics were called to battle the blaze, which was extinguished around 3:43 a.m., according to an FDNY spokesman.
"Bridging communities is a priority for the Adams Administration and NYC DOT, and the Ocean Avenue Pedestrian Bridge literally does just that," said DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. "This iconic wooden bridge from a century ago was in much need of tender loving care, and together former Assembly Member Cymbrowitz, the local community, and DOT's operational teams stepped up and delivered for Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach and all of Brooklyn."
