I understood at a very early age how much place matters and how impactful government services can be on one's life. The Mayor's Office of Equity and Racial Justice was really focused on working with agencies to think about how they're addressing inequity, whether it's through budget as a lever or personnel as a lever, procurement, policymaking. But land use is a lever as well.

It was frigid on Thursday when the Shoofly - a 64-foot 1941 tugboat forged with American steel - set out along the Newtown Creek to carve up the ice sheets blocking barges from getting through. The ice parted soundlessly before the 78-ton vessel as it made its way past the Kosciuszko Bridge, which connects industrial stretches of Brooklyn and Queens, through a stretch of creek that isn't as busy as its mouth near the East River.

In Coney Island, the Coney Island Museum will partner with HDC to promote the museum's goals for the neighborhood, including visioning a future that honors the neighborhood's legendary character in the wake of the divisive casino proposal. Plans also include walking tours and a survey of historic buildings in the neighborhood.

The building, developed by Avery Hall, features 133 units with layouts ranging from one- to four-bedroom homes and soaring 9-foot windows, a rare find in New York City. "We have three bedrooms, even up to four bedroom homes, we look to provide a platform for families that are looking for larger spaces to stay in New York and to thrive in New York," said Jesse Wark, Avery Hall partner and co-founder.
