A blown transformer appears to be to blame for the partial closure of the Caldecott Tunnel, which could extend into the weekend, Caltrans officials said Friday. The mechanical issue which was caused by a string of powerful storms that slammed into the Bay Area this week shut down bores 1 and 3 of the Caldecott Tunnel on Wednesday evening, causing delays on Highway 24, a key connector between Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

A motorcyclist has died after a crash Saturday afternoon on the portion of Interstate 80 through Berkeley. The motorcyclist, who has not yet been identified, was involved in a crash with two other vehicles in the highway's eastbound lanes shortly near University Avenue after 3 p.m., according to a California Highway Patrol spokesperson. Medics pronounced the rider dead at the scene, police said.

Evidence of gunfire was found at the scene of a multi-vehicle crash in North York Sunday morning, said Toronto police. Officers responded to a crash at the Steeles Avenue West and Islington Avenue intersection around 6:24 a.m. Sunday, said Toronto police on social media. Despite there being evidence of gunfire, no shooting victims have been located at this time. A female driver of one of the vehicles was taken to hospital.

LIVERMORE - All eastbound lanes of Interstate 580 are closed in the Altamont Pass as crews work to extinguish a brush fire, according to the California Highway Patrol. Around 2:30 p.m., a vehicle fire was reported on the highway east of North Flynn Road. The flames then spread to the hillside. All eastbound lanes remained shutdown as of 3:10 p.m., the CHP said. Motorists were urged to use alternative routes if possible. Check back for updates.

The highway will be closed at the Mission Boulevard/Highway 238 exit beginning 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, Caltrans said in a traffic advisory.

The University Avenue exit off westbound Interstate 80 will close overnight from 9 p.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday for a repaving project.

The eastbound side of the Ted Williams Tunnel was closed temporarily due to an Amazon delivery van that caught fire while traversing the tunnel.
