Andy Jassy, Amazon's CEO, informed employees in a memo that the company plans to utilize AI, predicting a reduction in its corporate workforce due to efficiency gains. He emphasized the need for curiosity regarding AI, noting that while technology is creating opportunities, it poses a significant risk of job losses, particularly in entry-level positions. Other tech leaders, such as Geoffrey Hinton, warn that AI could fundamentally change the job landscape, potentially eliminating many existing white-collar roles and not necessarily creating new positions to replace them.
"We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs," Jassy wrote.
"This is a very different kind of technology," Hinton said, pushing back against arguments that job losses from AI will be outweighed by new job creation.
