Juxtapoz Magazine - The "Secret Garden" of Shona McAndrew
Briefly

The 'Secret Garden' exhibition by Shona McAndrew represents a pivotal shift in her artistic journey, showcasing a dynamic body of work that explores women's connection to nature. Departing from previous depictions of women in domestic settings, McAndrew now immerses her subjects in idyllic natural landscapes, expressing themes of freedom, safety, and vulnerability. The exhibition features a variety of paintings and watercolors that invite viewers into an Arcadian world, where women embrace both wildness and intimacy with their environment, liberating their identities from societal constraints.
I wanted my imagined world to feel indulgent. I wanted it to come purely from my imagination, to paint a fantasy world that feels perfect.
It's perfect only because it doesn't exist. It can't exist in reality and that felt liberating for the work, for me and for the ladies I paint.
