The dismantling of Valencia's center bikeway has transformed the street into a complex challenge for cyclists, who must navigate closed lanes and obstacles. Cyclist Mitul Kapadia, amid the changes, expressed concern for safety, recalling the previous protected lanes that offered reassurance. This shift follows a unanimous vote by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors after extensive public debate. As workers begin removing speed bumps and repainting, a curbside bike lane is expected to be introduced soon, reflecting ongoing changes in San Francisco’s cycling infrastructure.
As city employees began disassembling Valencia's divisive center bikeway on Tuesday, the street became a 'choose your own adventure' for cyclists.
Now 'everyone is free to get run over wherever,' he said. Kapadia works at UCSF as a doctor, specializing in concussions.
Cyclists did all of the above. Wearing a visored helmet, Mitul Kapadia waited at the intersection of Valencia and 17th streets and evaluated his options.
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors' unanimous vote in January to move the bikeway from center to curbside came after over a year of public debate.
