The victim told police he was walking along Fulton Street listening to music just after 5 p.m. when a passerby reached out and snatched the over-ear headphones, and took off down Hoyt Street.
Feeling fearful for his life, the victim sent the cash before calling the police.
The robber later tried to charge $343 on the card at Walgreens, but the payment didn't go through.
Officers were searching for surveillance footage to identify the thief.
