On May 19, a fire erupted in a three-story building in Sunset Park, resulting in the death of a 53-year-old man, Ashiq Hussein, and injuries to three others, including a firefighter. The blaze began on the second floor at 7:10 a.m., leading to a rapid response from 60 emergency personnel who managed to extinguish the flames within an hour. Hussein tragically fell from a window during the rescue operation and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Police said while firefighters were getting people out of the building, Ashiq Hussein, 53, fell from the window and hit the ground.
Twelve units and 60 Fire and EMS workers rushed to the scene, managing to put the fire out within an hour.
Two other civilians were treated for smoke inhalation, while one firefighter sustained a leg injury and is currently in stable condition.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation after the blaze started at 7:10 a.m. on the second floor.
