“This alleged behavior is completely unacceptable,” city Department of Education spokeswoman Jenna Lyle said in a statement. “This employee has been suspended pending the outcome of the arrest, and if convicted, we will pursue their termination. There is nothing more important than the safety and well-being of our students.”
The injured student was treated at the scene, sources said. This incident follows a string of violent occurrences involving teens in New York City last week.
The arrest of Luis Benalcazar, 75, for allegedly pushing a 14-year-old student at Brooklyn Transition Center raises serious concerns about safety in schools.
More violence among youths in NYC includes a stabbing of a 14-year-old girl and a robbery at knifepoint involving a 16-year-old boy.
