""When you first start, it's easy to confuse busyness and going to meetings with leadership," Jordan said last week on a panel of CEOs at The New York Times DealBook Summit. "...Because what we all find, I'm sure, is there's no time to 'work' and you confuse going to meetings with the work.""
""For 2026, his goal is to keep his calendar completely clear every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoon-blocking anyone from booking meetings during those hours.""
""It's so that you can work on things you need to work on. You can think about what's important right now. You can call people you need to talk to," Jordan added."
Bob Jordan, CEO of Southwest Airlines, is protecting his time by keeping his calendar completely clear every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoon in 2026 to prevent meetings from crowding out high-value work. He warns that leaders often mistake busyness and constant meetings for leadership and that back-to-back meetings leave little time to do work only executives can do. Jordan emphasizes the need for uninterrupted time to think, prioritize, and contact necessary people. Meetings proliferated during the pandemic and now nearly 80% of people report being overwhelmed by meetings, reducing time for deep work. Southwest posted a surprise profit and its stock is up about 23% year-to-date.
