California is ready to fight Trump again - this time over tariffs
Briefly

California Gov. Gavin Newsom plans to engage with global leaders to seek exemption for the state from President Trump's recent tariffs. He stated that California represents stability and has urged trading partners not to be affected by federal tariff policies. Trump's tariffs, particularly hurting China, have impacted the markets negatively, prompting Newsom to pivot towards reinforcing trade opportunities for California. This move reignites a conflict between Newsom and Trump, particularly as Newsom positions himself for potential national political aspirations amidst criticism from the White House.
"TO OUR TRADING PARTNERS AROUND THE GLOBE - California is here and ready to talk," Newsom wrote on X. "We will not sit idly by during Trump's tariff war."
"Donald Trump's tariffs do not represent all Americans," Newsom said, emphasizing California's commitment to maintaining its trade relationships despite federal actions.
"Today, I have directed my administration to look at new opportunities to expand trade and to remind our trading partners around the globe that California remains a stable partner," stated Newsom.
The White House wasted little time firing back, urging Newsom to focus on "out-of-control homelessness, crime, regulations, and unaffordability in California."
