The speed camera at Goethals Road North and Jules Drive on Staten Island is under scrutiny for being seen as a speed trap, catching drivers at high speeds transitioning to a lower limit. Despite the criticisms, local residents like Kurt Timmermann recognize its effectiveness in improving safety, especially for children at the nearby school. Recent data shows the camera issued over 6,300 tickets in just a few months, raising significant fines, yet on-site observations indicate that drivers generally adhered to speed limits during a subsequent evaluation.
"Though Timmermann acknowledged drivers' frustrations of not being able to slow down in time, he also argued the camera is for the greater good."
"This one is worth it. It's ridiculous, but to be honest with you it does work," Timmermann said.
"Between March 1 and May 27 this year, the speed camera at Goethals Road North and Jules Drive issued 6,304 tickets, worth around $315,200 in fines."
"The camera has been criticized for years; it operates more like a speed trap, sparking debates among residents."
