Randy Hall, blind dishwasher at River North, Chicago restaurant Beatrix, voted 'America's Best Dishwasher' by Plate Magazine
"Randy was tragically carjacked and shot in the right eye at the age of 23, causing him to lose both his sense of sight and sense of smell. "Losing the eyesight, I had to change everything. I was starting a job as a welder and you need to see to weld, so I had to figure out something else to do. That's when I went to the Lighthouse and they said, 'We're going to find you what we can,''" says Hall."
""The dishwasher is the heartbeat of the kitchen," says Beatrix partner John Economos. Randy has now worked as a dishwasher at Beatrix for 12 years and was recently voted "America's Best Dishwasher" by Plate Magazine. "Randy's the first person here every day. Sometimes gets here before the chefs and managers. Super loyal. Always on time. Just a very hard worker. Just doesn't finish until the job's done," says Economos."
Randy Hall serves as head dishwasher at Beatrix in Chicago's River North, sometimes washing up to 10,000 dishes on busy days. He lost his sight and sense of smell after being carjacked and shot in the right eye at age 23. He connected with the Lighthouse for employment assistance and built a 12-year career at Beatrix. He was voted America's Best Dishwasher by Plate Magazine. Colleagues praise his punctuality, loyalty, work ethic, and thoroughness. He expresses pride in the recognition and plans to remain a dishwasher while encouraging others to compete for the role.
