"They want to make us feel unsafe, afraid and targeted simply because of our Jewish identity," one demonstrator said, highlighting how mask usage in protests can amplify feelings of insecurity among specific communities.
"Nobody thinks that the hatred will go away when we get rid of the masks, but we realize that if we get rid of the masks, you will include some consequences," said Shai Davidi, indicating that while the masks may provide anonymity, their removal could have far-reaching social implications.
"Masks not only protect people's health, but they also permit people to engage in protected First Amendment activity," said Beth Haroules, underscoring the conflict between public health measures and civil liberties.
"Protests are super spreader events. I'm sensitive to those who have preexisting conditions," commented Columbia student Sam Nhis, emphasizing the public health concerns tied to mask requirements during protests.
