The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights determined that administrators at Cesar E. Chavez Middle School exhibited deliberate indifference toward a mother's report of her daughter's alleged sexual assault, failing to follow Title IX and Title VI regulations.
Advocate Steven Figueroa highlighted the school district's negligence, stating, 'This school did all the wrong things,' pointing to their lack of action in both investigating the assault and supporting the victim after the incident.
The report detailed that the assault, which occurred in October 2022, was recorded and subsequently shared online, compounding the psychological trauma experienced by the victim.
Figueroa criticized the school for not providing adequate supervision or mental health services for the girl, whose academic performance plummeted after the traumatic incident.
