Ammanford, once known for its mining industry, has gained national attention following a gruesome knife attack at Amman Valley School in April, where a 13-year-old girl attacked teachers and a pupil. This incident coincided with growing knife crime concerns in the UK. Parents expressed anxiety over the school’s perceived safety and community image. The school went into lockdown as students fled. The attacker, now 14 and guilty of attempted murder, reflects a disturbing trend of youth violence overshadowing rural calmness, prompting a national conversation about security in educational settings.
It wasn't until 3pm when the parents were reunited with their children and details began to emerge of what happened inside the school.
On the same day the jury returned its verdicts, a 15 year-old boy died after being stabbed at a school in Sheffield, as the UK's knife crime epidemic continues.
Nothing ever happens here, one parent told The Independent. We're not inner city London, we're hundreds of miles away. We're just a rural community - but this is terrifying.
Seeing that something serious had happened, some students, instead of returning to their classrooms, chose to vault the school fence to escape.
