On Thursday, European leaders condemned the recent US tariffs announced by President Trump, which included a staggering 20 percent tariff on the EU. Ursula von der Leyen criticized the move as a significant blow to the global economy while suggesting that negotiations could still be pursued. The UK expressed hope that ongoing discussions with the US might ease the financial impact of its own tariffs. Additionally, leaders from France and Italy voiced their concerns and commitment to conduct analyses and seek collaborative solutions to counter the tariffs effectively.
"I deeply regret this choice," von der Leyen said on a visit to Uzbekistan. "There seems to be no order in the disorder. No clear path through the complexity and chaos that is being created as all US trading partners are hit."
The French government said just before Trump unveiled his list of tariffs that there would be a sector-by-sector study before the EU announces its response "before the end of April".
British business minister Jonathan Reynolds said London had "a range of tools at our disposal and we will not hesitate to act" in response to the tariffs.
