A Russian delegation has arrived in Damascus to negotiate the future of two military bases in Syria after the recent fall of Bashar al-Assad. This is the first visit since al-Assad’s government, a key ally of Moscow, faced opposition forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. With discussions anticipated about military base security and humanitarian aid, the visit highlights the shifting alliances within Syria and Russia's ongoing influence in the region, despite facing challenges since al-Assad's decline.
It's extraordinary that just six weeks ago these two sides were enemies, they were foes. Thousands if not hundreds of thousands of attacks have been carried out between the two of them.
The talks would likely cover potential plans for aid, food imports and the future of the military bases.
