Sherri Rasmussen was found brutally murdered in her home in 1986, initially ruled as a robbery gone wrong. However, evidence pointed clearly towards her husband's volatile ex-lover, LAPD officer Stephanie Lazarus, who had shown signs of harassment towards Rasmussen. Despite crucial evidence, including the type of bullets used and Lazarus' stolen gun, she wasn't a suspect for 23 years. The long delay in her arrest raised questions about the LAPD's handling of the case, much to the heartbreak of Rasmussen's family, who had tirelessly sought justice.
Rasmussen was bludgeoned and shot three times in what detectives initially labeled a burglary, a conclusion that remained unchallenged for two decades.
Evidence pointed to an emotional motive for the murder, particularly from John Ruetten's ex-lover, LAPD officer Stephanie Lazarus, who had previously harassed the victim.
