In a warning to transport officials, MP Paul Kohler highlighted the deteriorating state of roads in Merton, southwest London, where over a third of B and C classified roads, alongside 40% of unclassified roads, are marked as 'poor' by the Department for Transport. This increase in poor road conditions has become a significant concern for residents, with potholes contributing to dangerous driving and cycling situations. The council's handling of road maintenance has been criticized, indicating inadequate funding and management, and raising fears of Merton nearing the worst roads in England.
Over a third of Merton B and C classified roads have been deemed poor' by the Department for Transport (DfT), along with 40% of local (unclassified) roads.
Mr Kohler told the Minister last week: Too many of Britain's roads are in a shocking state of disrepair. Labour-run Merton Council has failed to maintain its own roads.
Merton has seen the total number of roads considered poor' by the DfT more than double from the previous year, now nearing the worst road status in England.
