On Wednesday at 2 a.m., a patrol unit spotted an off-highway vehicle in Running Springs, a community under siege by the Line fire. The two men inside abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee. They were found near Deep Creek Drive and subsequently arrested for unauthorized entry into a closed emergency area under evacuation orders.
The Line fire, which started on Sept. 5, has spread rapidly across more than 36,000 acres and only 18% of it has been contained. The area includes various communities such as Running Springs and Green Valley Lake that are currently under mandatory evacuation orders, highlighting the danger to residents.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department confirmed multiple arrests during this critical time, including a 34-year-old man suspected of starting the Line fire. Justin Wayne Halstenberg, identified as a FedEx contract driver, is being held without bail at the West Valley Detention Center for his alleged role in igniting the fire.
On the same day, another pair was arrested in San Antonio Heights during an evacuation warning due to the Bridge fire. Authorities noted that the suspects were found in possession of drugs as well as items that might facilitate theft, and curiously enough, they were also found with several wild opossums, which were unharmed and later released.
