The implementation of leaderboards in fitness applications shows a notable increase in daily step counts, averaging a 3.5% improvement for users. However, this effect varies significantly based on users’ prior activity levels.
Our findings indicate that while leaderboards can incentivize increased physical activity for sedentary users, they may inadvertently demotivate already active individuals, resulting in a daily reduction of 630 steps for those previously engaged.
