Recently appointed Florida Lt. Governor Jeanette Nuñez has been hired as the interim president of Florida International University, succeeding Kenneth A. Jessell. The decision came after a hastily called board meeting where an 11 to 1 vote confirmed her appointment, which was reportedly requested by Governor Ron DeSantis' office. Nuñez, an FIU graduate and former healthcare lobbyist, is the first woman to lead the university, which has 56,000 students and a growing academic reputation. Her appointment aims to enhance the university's funding prospects in Tallahassee.
The decision, made in an online board meeting called two days ago, places a senior Republican leader in charge of a state school with 56,000 students.
Nuñez will take the helm on Feb. 17, Tovar said, after the state board of governors approves her appointment and Tovar negotiates an employment contract.
