Google's former CEO has some simple advice if you're trying to focus at work or relax: 'Turn off your phone'
Briefly

Eric Schmidt emphasizes that deep concentration is hindered by the constant notifications from technology. He advises young researchers to turn off their phones to work effectively. Schmidt reflects on his role as a former Google CEO, acknowledging that the tech industry aims to monetize users' attention. He notes a significant decline in attention spans, with research revealing that people can focus on screens for only 47 seconds today, compared to 2.5 minutes twenty years ago. This trend challenges traditional ways of engaging in thoughtful, extended analysis.
"You can't think deeply as a researcher with this thing buzzing," he added.
"We've essentially tried to monetize all of your waking hours with something, some form of ads, some form of entertainment, some form of subscription that is completely antithetical to the way humans traditionally work with respect to long thoughtful examination of principles," Schmidt said.
