A report has surfaced regarding a spyware campaign targeting members of Mediterranea Saving Humans, an NGO that assists immigrants. Beppe Caccio, co-founder of the organization, revealed he and another co-founder, Luca Casarini, received alerts from WhatsApp about the alleged infiltration by spyware developed by Paragon, an Israeli company. Both have expressed intent to discover the source of the targeting, with Casarini filing a complaint to the Prosecutor's Office in Palermo. The incident reflects broader concerns over privacy and governmental surveillance, highlighted by the involvement of high-profile activists and journalists.
'We don't have anything to hide. Those who spy have a lot to hide,' said Casarini.
Caccio disclosed he was targeted after another one of his organization's co-founders, Luca Casarini, said publicly last week that he had also received a notification from WhatsApp.
WhatsApp said it had disrupted the campaign and notified around 90 people who had been targeted.
The Italian government denied involvement in the hack.
