SFPD Rescues Two Dogs From SoMa Apartment After Apparent Battery Fire
Briefly

A fire broke out Saturday afternoon in an apartment building at Sixth and Minna streets, reportedly caused by a charging battery in a multi-residential building. Fortunately, a fire sprinkler helped contain the fire, allowing the SF Fire Department to rescue two dogs trapped inside the apartment. Thankfully, no injuries were reported during this incident, despite the apparent danger posed by lithium-ion batteries which have been under scrutiny due to a significant increase in related fires.
According to the SF Fire Department, the number of battery fires they respond to has tripled from 2013 to 2023. This alarming trend comes amid recent fires linked to lithium-ion batteries used in e-bikes, e-scooters, and hoverboards. The tragic consequences seen in prior incidents have prompted officials to advocate for stricter fire codes regarding the charging and storage of such batteries to prevent future emergencies.
