South Western train derails at 85mph after hitting spare track left on line
Briefly

A train incident occurred on March 4, involving a Basingstoke to Waterloo service derailing due to a leftover rail on the track. Fortunately, no passengers were injured. An investigation by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) determined that poor communication and inadequate supervision contributed to the situation where the rail was not properly identified during safety checks. As a result, both Colas Rail and Network Rail were instructed to reassess their processes to enhance safety and ensure thorough checks are conducted after engineering works.
The train was carrying around 100 passengers at the time, none of whom were injured in the incident.
Investigators found that checks did not identify that the rail was in a potentially hazardous position before the railway was handed back for normal operation.
Colas Rail has now been told to review processes relating to collecting redundant materials when working on or near the line.
The risk is very clear. Unfortunately, this accident happened because that risk was not managed properly.
