Tens of thousands of Staten Islanders rely on MTA express buses daily for commuting to Manhattan. However, they face frustrations due to the MTA's mismanagement, with problems stemming from reduced service and broken buses amid increased ridership post-pandemic.
Filippa Grisafi highlighted the disconnect between rising ridership and deteriorating service, stating, 'We still don't have the buses on the road. They're not being repaired,' emphasizing the urgency of addressing staffing and maintenance issues.
Grisafi expressed her concerns over MTA's decision to cut about 10 positions of dispatchers, saying, 'The overnight dispatcher who manages the SIM 23 and SIM 24, that’s been eliminated,' indicating how these reductions lead to further operational challenges.
Despite current challenges, the MTA has promised improvements, stating that in 2025, they will increase express bus service across Staten Island to better meet the needs of the community.
