Vik Sohonie discovered an old Uzbek record in New York, leading to collaboration with local vinyl collector Anvar Kalandarov. They aimed to track down the original artists and reissue rare Central Asian pop music from the late '70s and early '80s. This exploration reveals Tashkent's role as a cultural sanctuary for various Soviet musicians during historical upheavals, including wartime displacements and a burgeoning music scene that fostered collaboration across ethnic groups, including Tajiks, Crimean Tatars, and Uyghurs.
One day I'm going to do something with this record, but I never had an in until Anvar contacted me. His knowledge was invaluable for us to explore the Uzbek music scene.
Tashkent was long this sanctuary for musicians across the vast expanse of the Soviet Union, a place where various artists could collaborate and share their sound.
