Exclusive | Stand clear: Sicko slugs NYC subway conductor over closing doors
Briefly

Jean Joseph, a NYC subway conductor, was attacked while checking for passenger safety from a train window, resulting in serious injuries. The assailant, described as deranged and angry for missing the train, struck Joseph, breaking his teeth and causing trauma. This incident adds to rising concerns over safety for transit workers, with reported assaults up 13% in the NYC subway during 2024. Joseph expressed his fears and concern for his safety as he recuperates, uncertain about his return to work amid fears for his and fellow conductors' safety.
When the unhinged assailant heard the conductor's call for help come over the supervisor's radio, he took off down the stairs and out of the station, Joseph said.
Joseph was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital for a cut lip and two cracked teeth. He isn't sure when he'll return to work.
"I think it's messed up," Joseph said of the May 2 attack, noting another train conductor he works with was also recently struck.
I'm afraid to stick my head out the window now," he said. "It's part of our procedure. Sometimes people's clothes or bag handles might get stuck in the doors so we observe for their safety.
