The Antioch Police Department, grappling with the fallout from a series of scandals, is striving to rebuild under new leadership. The ongoing effort to fill critical positions is crucial in stabilizing the department, which is now operating with less than half of its authorized officer capacity. Interim Antioch Police Chief Brian Addington noted that only 73 out of 115 authorized officer positions are filled, with significant staff on leave or modified duty, highlighting the urgent need for recruitment.
In an effort to stabilize leadership, the Antioch Police Department requested the City Council authorize the hiring of an additional police captain position for the remainder of the fiscal year. This request was unanimously approved, aimed at enhancing the department's capabilities while dealing with ongoing staff shortages, particularly as one captain is on long-term leave and another is expected to retire soon.
The department is currently facing challenges, with only 56 officers available for duty after multiple departures and leaves of absence. With a target of reaching full staffing in about a year, this shortage significantly hampers operational effectiveness. Interim Chief Addington has emphasized the importance of filling these critical roles to ensure public safety and restore confidence in the police amid turbulent times.
