Firefighters responded to a basement fire at a three-story, attached wood-frame private home at 272 56th St. in Sunset Park around 12:55 p.m. Crews contended with freezing conditions, a car blocking a hydrant and another hydrant frozen by the cold. About 60 firefighters stretched three hose lines and attacked the main body of the fire. Searches found no occupants. Residents were displaced and stood outside holding loved ones and pets. Firefighters brought the blaze under control at about 1:30 p.m. No civilians or firefighters were injured. The FDNY fire marshal's office will determine cause and origin.
