Firefighters went to 1301 Poe St. shortly before 4 p.m. after 911 callers reported the fire and that there might be a victim inside the burning building, Berkeley Fire Department Deputy Chief Keith May said. When firefighters arrived there were flames and smoke coming from three sides of the building, May said. They forced their way into one unit home and found a woman's body within, May said.
Firefighters were dispatched to a six-story apartment building on 35th St. near 31st Ave. in Astoria after a fire broke out on the third floor just before 11 p.m. on Thursday. A woman in her 90s and a 61-year-old woman were removed from an apartment and taken to Mount Sinai Queens, where the older woman died. Her name was not immediately disclosed. The younger woman was listed in critical condition at the hospital, officials said. The fire was put out by 11:30 p.m.

Wednesday's fire at the Wang Fuk Court complex broke out on the netting around the lower levels of one of the buildings before spreading to foam panels that quickly caught fire. Winds then blew the flames onto the other buildings, with seven out of eight buildings affected. It took until Friday for the fire to be fully extinguished.

No one was injured after a tour bus in Cape Cod was completely engulfed in flames Saturday afternoon, fire crews said. The driver of the bus was able to evacuate all of the passengers before firefighters arrived around noon on Saturday, the Wellfleet Fire Department said. Crews found a bus "fully engulfed in flames, with fire burning in the brush approaching a nearby home." Firefighters knocked the fire out, the department said, and prevented it from spreading to the home.
Officials said the blaze started on the first floor of a three-story private residence at 205 27th St. in Greenwood Heights, just after 10:20 p.m. on Aug. 31. Engine Company 228 and Tower Ladder 122 rushed to the scene, finding heavy smoke billowing from the first and second floors of the dwelling.
