Max Golubenko, a senior tennis player from Manhasset, faced challenges after a tough summer tournaments where he struggled to win matches. Instead of quitting, he committed to improving his fitness, which transformed his game. Now, with a perfect 13-0 record, he heads into the Nassau County tournament, optimistic and determined. After finishing third in the previous yearâs tournament, he feels ready to compete at a higher level. Golubenko's journey reflects resilience, a strong work ethic, and a passion for tennis, with aspirations of turning professional in the future.
"I really started adding in the fitness element and my game changed," said Golubenko, who loves tennis so much he wrote about it on a supplemental college essay. Now, as a senior, he's at the top of the Long Island leaderboards, boasting a 13-0 record heading into the Nassau County tournament this weekend at Eisenhower Park.
"Through those dry streaks and those hard times, they built me to the level that I'm at today. I'm happy and proud of myself ... my family is convinced I'm going pro one day."
"Last time I was up against opponents physically stronger than me who were playing much longer than me," said Golubenko, who got serious about tennis at age 13 after moving to the suburbs. "It was just a starting point ... and this is my senior year, so I'm all in."
