A recent study mapped the human body's response to 14 different emotions using participant-generated silhouettes. Each emotion stirred specific physical sensations; for instance, happiness and love activated most of the body, while fear generated a sharp chest response. Researchers published these emotional body charts in a 2013 paper and later used them to compare ancient Mesopotamian emotional expressions to modern perceptions. Interestingly, while many emotions aligned, ancient texts associated happiness with the liver and anger with the feet, showing significant shifts in emotional experience over time.
The emotional body charts reveal that happiness and love activate nearly the entire body while emotions like fear and anger have more localized sensations.
Depression manifests as numbness in limbs, represented as blue on the map, reflecting the profound impact of emotional states on our physical sensations.
