Parenting requires a balance between teaching life lessons and maintaining harmony. When a teenager requested a new phone case, the parent turned it down yet seized the opportunity to teach financial literacy. They explained the difference between wants and needs and introduced strategies such as earning the item, implementing a waiting period before purchases, and exploring more budget-friendly options. This method not only promoted understanding but also respected the teenager's feelings, fostering a productive dialogue on money management.
Instead of shutting down the conversation, I used it as an opportunity to talk about wants versus needs.
I suggested a compromise, which I offered to her in three parts: Earn It, Wait It Out, and Explore Alternatives.
